Pair Of Meiji Satsuma Dishes By Shuzan For Yasuda, Japanese Antiques
£2,000 $2,701 €2,294
A superb matched pair of Japanese Meiji period Satsuma dishes of finely potted shallow form, painted to an exceptional standard and signed Shuzan (??) for the Yasuda company. The slight differences in diameter show that each dish was individually thrown, while the decoration has been conceived as an intentional pair.
Each dish centres on a lively spring procession beneath blossoming cherry trees, with elegant ladies, attendants and children moving across a river landscape. Below runs a smaller interior vignette with lacquer stands, tea utensils and folded textiles, a quiet counterpoint to the animated outdoor scene. The painter has used a sophisticated palette of soft enamels and dense raised gilt, building up patterns on the robes almost like embroidery.
The wide brocade-style border combines folding fans, kimono fragments and floral reserves – peony, chrysanthemum and prunus – set against finely textured gold grounds. The reverse shows the classic creamy crackled glaze associat...ed with Kyoto Satsuma. Both dishes are signed underneath with the red lozenge mark for Shuzan and the Yasuda logo, confirming production by a high-grade Kyoto workshop for the export market around 1890–1905.
Condition is excellent for age: enamels are crisp, the gilding remains strong with only the lightest rubbing to the outer rim, and there are no chips, cracks, hairlines or restorations. Both pieces fluoresce cleanly under UV examination. A very decorative and genuinely collectable pair of Meiji Satsuma dishes, ready to hang or to display flat in a cabinet.
Dimensions: Dish 1 – diameter 22.4 cm, height 4 cm; Dish 2 – diameter 21.8 cm, height 4 cm.
