Meissen, established in Germany in the early 18th century, was the first European manufacturer of hard-paste porcelain. Figurines depicting pastoral scenes, shepherdesses, and courtly figures became immensely popular during the Rococo period.

Meissen pieces are crafted from high-fired hard-paste porcelain, characterised by a dense, white body. They are hand-modelled and meticulously hand-painted with overglaze enamels, often incorporating delicate gilded scrollwork.

Authentic pieces typically feature the underglaze blue crossed swords mark, used in various forms since the 1720s. Additional indicators of age include finely detailed modelling, hand-painted polychrome decoration, and impressed or painted model numbers.

These decorative objects work well as focal points on mantelpieces, inside glass-fronted cabinets, or on polished wooden side tables, adding a touch of classical elegance and historic craftsmanship to contemporary spaces.

To preserve antique porcelain, keep it out of direct sunlight to prevent fading of the enamels. Dust gently with a soft, dry brush and avoid washing with water or harsh chemicals to protect the fragile hand-painted details and gilding.
