Fine 19th Century Limoges Grisailles Enamel Tazza with Portrait – French, Circa 1880

19th century
Description

Fine 19th Century Limoges Grisailles Enamel Tazza with Portrait – French, Circa 1880

A superb 19th-century Limoges grisailles enamel tazza, exquisitely hand-painted with the finely detailed portrait of a French nobleman, possibly Pierre d’Aubusson (1423–1503), Grand Master of the Order of Saint John.

This outstanding example of Limoges enamel artistry showcases remarkable craftsmanship and precision. The central portrait medallion is rendered in delicate monochrome enamelling, demonstrating superb shading and lifelike expression. The border features a mask and scrolling floral motifs, all executed with finesse. The tazza stands on an elegantly decorated pedestal base, with additional enamel detailing to the underside.

Although unsigned, the quality of work clearly reflects that of a highly skilled Limoges artist. There is some minor age-related crazing and light cracking to the underside, typical of pieces of this age and a crack to the edge of the border at approx 3.0'clock, but it does not detract from its beauty or display value.

A striking and highly decorative antique enamel tazza, perfect for collectors of Limoges enamels, French decorative arts, or Renaissance revival pieces.
