An attractive mid-Victorian card table, the shaped top veneered in attractively figured burr walnut with a fine marquetry cartouche and boxwood stringing, swivelling and folding open to reveal a baize-lined playing surface. The solid walnut base is finely carved, with clustered turned uprights above a quatreform platform, all raised on scrolling legs atop original brass and ceramic castors.
A decorative, practical piece from the high Victorian period showing the influence of the Rococo Revival style, designed with considerable flair and craftsmanship. Compact and ideal as a side table or console when closed, while giving access to a fully functional playing surface when required.
Presented in very good antique condition with a rich aged patina, light surface wear, some veneer repairs and a historic repair to one foot. Later baize lining in keeping with the original. Structurally sound, clean and ready to place in the home.
English, circa 1870.
