Beautiful Rare Spode Sprig Ware Stoneware Pot Pourri Basket C1790

19th century
Description

Beautiful Spode Sprigged Stoneware Pot Pourri Basket with Lid, originally produced by Spode from the late 1700s, this is likely to have been made around 1780 - 1820

This piece is a fine example of sprigged stoneware, a strong, opaque, and vitreous ceramic known for its durability and elegance. The basket features raised decorative motifs (sprigs) — small ornamental clay designs applied by hand — showcasing the craftsmanship typical of early Spode work.

Sprigged stoneware was highly popular in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, with similar pieces also made by Wedgwood. Each piece is unique, combining artistry and function, and was produced in both glazed and unglazed finishes.

A rare and charming collectible that reflects the heritage of Spode’s traditional English ceramics — perfect for collectors or lovers of classic pottery design. Offered in great condition, impressed mark to the base.

A pot pourri basket is a decorative ceramic vessel designed to hold dried fragrant herbs and flowers, featuring pierced openings in the lid to diffuse scent. Sprigged stoneware refers to the technique where separate clay reliefs, often in contrasting cobalt blue, are applied to the unfired vessel body.

Georgian sprig ware was manufactured using refined unglazed or glazed stoneware and earthenware. The decorative sprigs were created using oxide-coloured clays, most commonly cobalt blue, applied onto off-white, cream, or buff stoneware bodies.

Authentic 18th-century Spode sprigged stoneware displays precise, crisp hand-applied sprigged relief patterns, detailed pierced apertures, and early impressed makers marks such as Spode on the base, along with natural age wear on the unglazed foot rim.

Display the ceramic basket on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or open shelving unit as a functional accent piece. Its classic blue and off-white colour palette integrates well into traditional country decor and modern eclectic schemes.

Dust the item using a soft, dry brush or microfibre cloth to clean intricate sprigged details and pierced holes. Avoid full immersion in water or chemical cleaners, as porous unglazed stoneware can absorb moisture and residues.
