Description

A wonderfully original late Georgian mahogany tea table in the neoclassical style. The beautifully figured mahogany fold-over top with rounded corners opens to reveal a clean polished surface supported by a rear double gateleg action. The frieze is inlaid with satinwood and boxwood, all raised on slender square tapering legs outlined with delicate stringing.

The table embodies the lightness and precision of late Georgian craftsmanship. A versatile piece of pleasing scale suited to use as a console in a hallway or drawing room, while the fold-over top offers a practical expanded occasional surface.

Presented in very good original antique condition with a warm aged patina, minor surface wear and a few old marks to the top consistent with age. Historic traces of inactive worm to the softer wood of gateleg sections, inactive, long gone and entirely stable. Structurally sound, clean and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1790.

The George III style spans the reign of King George III from 1760 to 1820, encompassing influences from early neoclassical designs to the refined cabinetry of Thomas Chippendale, George Hepplewhite, and Thomas Sheraton.

These tables were typically constructed from solid and veneered dense hardwoods such as mahogany or satinwood, often featuring hand-cut dovetail joints, swing-leg mechanisms to support the folding top, and intricate boxwood stringing.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery such as hand-sawn timber marks, subtle signs of age and oxidisation in the wood grain, traditional secondary woods in the framing, and precise hand-inlaid details rather than modern machine stamping.

A historical fold-over table adds architectural warmth and function to modern spaces, serving ideally as a slim console against a living room wall or unfolded as a striking focal point when dressed with understated ceramics or lighting.

Preserve antique wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting, applying microcrystalline wax periodically, and avoiding silicone-based polishes in favour of a soft, dry cloth for dusting.
