Satsuma ware is a type of Japanese pottery originating from Satsuma Province in Kyushu, traditionally characterised by an ivory-coloured, crackle-glazed earthenware body decorated with intricate enamels and gilt.

Satsuma pieces are constructed from local clay, fired to form an earthenware base, and then finished with a distinctive transparent crackle glaze before being hand-painted with mineral pigments and raised gold leaf.

Authentic pieces from the Meiji period typically feature fine, even crackle glaze, delicate polychrome and gilt brushwork depicting traditional figures or nature, and maker or artist seals painted on the base.

Satsuma pottery pieces work well as focal points on surfaces like sideboards or mantelpieces, bringing texture and historical depth to both neutral contemporary and traditional room schemes.

To preserve antique ceramics, keep them out of direct sunlight to prevent pigment fading, dust gently with a soft dry cloth, and avoid using any liquid cleaners or solvents on the fragile gilt surfaces.
