Yixing pottery originates from the city of Yixing in Jiangsu province, China, dating back to the Song dynasty. It gained immense popularity during the Ming and Qing dynasties for its unique purple clay, which is prized for brewing tea due to its porous properties that enhance flavour over time.

Authentic Yixing teapots are crafted from Zisha clay, which translates to purple sand. This local unglazed ceramic material contains high levels of quartz, kaolin, and iron oxide, giving the clay its distinctive natural colours and granular texture after firing.

Authentic antique pieces are traditionally hand-built using coiling and paddling techniques rather than modern slip casting. They often feature makers seals or marks on the base, handle, or inside the lid, alongside consistent ageing patination and appropriate weight distribution.

An antique Yixing teapot can be displayed as a sculptural object on an open shelf, sideboard, or glass-front cabinet. Pairing it with minimalist decor allows the intricate clay texture and earthy tones to serve as a sophisticated focal point.

Antique stoneware should be washed only with warm water without any soap, as the porous clay absorbs chemical detergents and scents. Thorough air drying and careful handling prevent structural damage to delicate spouts and handles.
