The George III period spans from 1760 to 1820, characterised by classical proportions, refined craftsmanship, and a transition from heavy mahogany designs influenced by Chippendale to lighter, neoclassical styles inspired by Hepplewhite and Sheraton.

Cabinet makers predominantly used solid mahogany and figured mahogany veneers applied to secondary woods like pine or oak. Construction typically involved hand-cut dovetails, mortise and tenon joints, and solid brass castors on pedestal bases.

Authenticity is indicated by timber patination, hand-planed surfaces, traditional joinery without modern screws, and genuine wear consistent with age. Look for markings of hand-turned pedestal bases and original brass hardware.

Pairing a dark wood antique dining table with contemporary minimalist seating or industrial lighting creates a balanced, eclectic aesthetic that highlights the historical grain and craftsmanship of the wood.

Maintain antique mahogany by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent wood splitting. Clean with a soft, dry cloth and periodically nourish the timber with traditional beeswax rather than modern silicone sprays.
