The Edwardian period spans the reign of King Edward VII from 1901 to 1910, though the style often encompasses pieces made up to the outbreak of the First World War in 1914. Furniture from this era moved away from the heavy, dark ornamentation of the Victorian period, favouring lighter, airier designs inspired by Georgian, Chippendale, and Sheraton revivals.

Edwardian tables were predominantly crafted from solid hardwoods and veneers, with mahogany, satinwood, and walnut being particularly popular. Construction relied on traditional joinery techniques such as mortise and tenon joints, dovetailing, and hand-carved detailing, often featuring polished surfaces finished with shellac or wax.

Authentic pieces can be identified by inspecting the construction methods, such as hand-cut joints, timber selection consistent with the period, and natural ageing like minor surface oxidisation and wear. Makers marks, brass stamps, or paper labels from department stores and cabinet makers of the era can also provide confirmation of authenticity.

An antique mahogany table brings warmth, texture, and historical contrast to contemporary spaces. It can be paired with minimalist seating to highlight its sculptural form, or used as a grounding centrepiece in a room featuring neutral tones, contemporary lighting, and organic materials.

Antique wood furniture should be kept away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the timber from drying out and cracking. Maintenance should be limited to dusting with a soft, dry cloth and occasionally applying a high-quality, natural beeswax polish to nourish the wood and protect the finish.
