Black basalt is a fine-grained, unglazed stoneware developed in Staffordshire during the eighteenth century, most famously perfected by Josiah Wedgwood around 1769 to resemble antique classical stone.

It is crafted from a precise mixture of ball clay, iron oxide, manganese, and silica, fired at high temperatures to achieve a dense, solid black body that requires no surface glaze.

Authentic pieces often feature crisp, sharp moulded relief details, a smooth unglazed surface with a subtle sheen, lightweight yet dense construction, and sometimes impressed maker marks on the base.

Their matte dark texture provides a striking contrast against neutral surfaces, making them ideal for display on open shelving, sideboards, or minimalist mantelpieces to add historic depth.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and a mild detergent with a soft brush, avoiding harsh scrubbing or dishwashers to protect the delicate unglazed surface from abrasion.
