This Regency platter drainer dates from circa 1820 and belongs to the Blue Pheasants pattern by Mason’s Ironstone. Formed from ceramic ironstone, the piece carries a white glaze decorated with a blue transfer-printed motif showing pheasants among peony flowers, accented by circular drainage perforations across the surface and a central drainage hole. The object shows light marks of use to the surface with no chips or cracks. It measures 2 cm high, 31 cm wide, and 22.5 cm deep. In a modern home, this piece rests flat upon a dining room sideboard top or a kitchen shelf as a decorative display object. Its traditional English country house style brings historic ceramic artistry to an interior space.

FAQs

Patented in 1813 by Charles James Mason, ironstone china was developed in Staffordshire as a vitreous, highly durable alternative to imported Chinese porcelain, frequently decorated with cobalt blue transfer-printed botanical and avian motifs.

Platter drainers were moulded from thick earthenware or ironstone clay, manually pierced with functional drainage perforations before firing, and decorated using copper-plate transfer printing before receiving a clear protective glaze.

Authentic period pieces display significant visual weight, hand-punched circular perforations with slight irregularities, minor misalignments in the transfer paper seams, and impressed or printed manufacturer backstamps on the underside.

These decorative perforated pieces are ideal for vertical display on open kitchen shelving, mounted within gallery wall arrangements, or leaned against cabinetry on a sideboard top to highlight their cobalt blue graphics.

Clean gently using warm water and mild non-abrasive liquid soap, avoiding prolonged soaking, harsh chemical cleaners, dishwasher cycles, and thermal shock from hot water.
