FAQs

A Sutherland table is a type of narrow drop-leaf table featuring exceptionally narrow flaps supported by swinging gate legs, which became popular during the Victorian era in the mid-19th century.

These tables are traditionally constructed from dense hardwoods like rosewood, walnut, or mahogany, frequently incorporating intricate brass, satinwood, or ivory inlay and joined with traditional mortise and tenon joinery.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit period-appropriate hand-cut dovetails, genuine timber shrinkage and oxidisation, traditional hand-turned gate legs, and period marquetry rather than modern machine-stamped veneer.

Placed folded against a wall as a console or pulled out as a compact tea table, a slimline wooden table adds functional surface area and rich historical texture to living rooms or hallways without overwhelming the space.

Maintain antique rosewood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent wood splitting, and nourish the grain periodically using traditional beeswax rather than modern silicone polishes.
