A Marquetry and Burr Walnut Side Table in the Louis XV Style by Gillows

19th century
Description

Constructed using finely figured Circassian walnut, dressed with gilt bronze mounts; rising from slender tulipwood banded cabriole legs shod with bronze sabots and espagnolettes; the shaped frieze housing a singler drawer, and two velvet-lined pull out slides on the sides. The serpentine top finely bookmatched and inlaid with exceptional floral marquetry of various specimen woods. Stamped 'Gillow.'

English, circa 1855

See 'British Furniture 1820 to 1920' by Christopher Payne, 2023, p. 206, fig. 4.68, for a card table sharing identical design features.

Currently in unrestored original condition, please contact us for further information.

Robert Gillow (1704-1772), founder of the renowned Gillows firm, began as a provincial joiner and built one of the most successful furniture-making businesses in England. Establishing his workshop in 1730, he distinguished the company early on by directly importing fine West Indian timbers, particularly mahogany. With his sons Richard and Robert joining the enterprise, Gillow expanded from Lancaster to London's Oxford Street, attracting clients from government, aristocracy, and the rising middle class. The firm became known for superior craftsmanship, exceptional materials, and progressive design, maintaining its prominence for 170 years until merging with S.J. Waring in 1900. At its height, Gillows was the largest furniture manufacturer in England.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
