This French folk art ceramic figure takes the form of a white cat in a crouching pose, originating from the Poterie du Mesnil de Bavent in Normandy around 1900. Manufactured from glazed terracotta, the feline is finished in an off-white colour with a crazed glaze and textured fur moulding. Inset bright green glass eyes provide a striking contrast to the neutral body, which also features an embossed Bavent mark and Made in France stamping. The piece measures 20 cm high, 21 cm wide, and 46 cm deep. Originally designed as an architectural wall hanging to attach to a roof tile, this decorative antique functions as a distinctive collectible display object in a contemporary home. It is well suited for placement on a mantelpiece or a prominent shelf, bringing historical French character to interior spaces.

FAQs

Originating in Normandy during the nineteenth century, Bavent terracotta finials were created as decorative architectural elements to adorn ridge tiles and roofs. Sculpted into domestic animals, birds, and mythical creatures, these earthenware items were designed both to protect roof junctions and to demonstrate the homeowners status.

These figures were sculpted from local terracotta clay, detailed with hand-moulded surface textures, and fired with weather-resistant lead or tin glazes. Inset glass eyes were frequently added prior to or after glazing to enhance the realism of animal figures.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-modelled details, natural glaze crazing, and hollow bases designed to fit onto roofing tiles. Inset glass eyes were typically secured with plaster or clay, showing signs of age-related discolouration around the rims.

In modern interior styling, these figures function as sculptural focal points on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or window sill. Their tactile glaze and distinct forms contrast well against modern minimalist backdrops or rustic timber furniture.

Clean glazed earthenware gently using a soft, dry cloth or a slightly damp microfibre sponge. Avoid abrasive chemical cleaners and prolonged exposure to moisture, particularly around glass eye sockets where adhesives may deteriorate over time.
