Description

This beautiful glazed terracotta wall hanging which originates from Bavent in France dates from c1900 and is in the form of white cat which has green glass eyes.

This decorative piece was manufactured by the iconic Poterie du Mesnil de Bavent and is embossed with the maker's Bavent mark to the cat's body and Made in France.

Poterie du Mesnil de Bavent is located in Calvados, Normandy and have been producing roofing accessories and architectural items since 1842. They are famous for their ceramic animals (cats, dogs, chickens etc).

The cats were originally designed to be attached to a roof tile to deter vermin.

A charming antique piece of Bavent that would look amazing on display and a sought after collector's piece.

Material: Glazed Terracotta.

Date: Late 19th - early 20th century.

Marks: Bavent. Made in France.

Dimensions: Width: 21 cm (8 1/4"). Length: 46 cm (18"). Height: 20 cm (8").

Weight: 2.052 Kg.

Condition: Very good antique condition with signs of use in keeping with age. The usual cracking to glaze, small chips and firing marks. An old repair to one leg. Please see pictures

Originating in Normandy during the nineteenth century, Bavent terracotta finials were created as decorative architectural elements to adorn ridge tiles and roofs. Sculpted into domestic animals, birds, and mythical creatures, these earthenware items were designed both to protect roof junctions and to demonstrate the homeowners status.

These figures were sculpted from local terracotta clay, detailed with hand-moulded surface textures, and fired with weather-resistant lead or tin glazes. Inset glass eyes were frequently added prior to or after glazing to enhance the realism of animal figures.
