Description

A rare early 19th-century figural perfume bottle by Jacob Petit, one of the most renowned French ceramicists of his time. The figure depicts a theatrical female character, likely Columbina from the Commedia dell’arte, rendered in glazed earthenware or stoneware and dating to c.1830. Originally fitted with a stopper (now missing), the bottle is hollow-moulded and richly gilded. The modelling, vivid color palette and substantial weight reflect the qualities of Petit's Parisian work during the 1830s. This example is particularly noteworthy for its preservation and authenticity. The erased stamp on the base - a common antiquarian practice of the time - further suggests early circulation in high-end markets. Comparable figural perfume bottles by Petit and his contemporaries are preserved in major French collections, including the Musée International de la Parfumerie in Grasse.

Condition and Dimensions:

Losses to gilding on the base. A small brownish mark on the hat, likely original paint from missing stopper or decorative finial. This detail does not affect the integrity of the piece. Otherwise very good original condition.
