Antique Bohemian Tea Set by Moser, Hand-gilded and Enamelled, Circa 1890

19th century
Description

A refined and rare antique Bohemian tea set comprising six cobalt glass cups and saucers, attributed to the renowned Moser glassworks, Karlsbad, Bohemia, circa 1890. Each piece is expertly hand-cut, wheel-polished, and lavishly decorated with gold and raised enamel in floral and scroll designs, demonstrating the exceptional craftsmanship for which Moser is celebrated. Moser glass was highly esteemed by royal families and exhibited at major international fairs, including Vienna (1873), Paris (1889), and Chicago (1893). Its clarity, precision-cut forms and sculptural enamel ornamentation earned it a distinctive position among European glassmakers of the period. Moser's works were commissioned by the Habsburg court, the Ottoman sultans, and other royal households across Europe. Comparable pieces are preserved in the Corning Museum of Glass, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, reflecting Moser’s established legacy.

Condition and Dimensions

Saucers: diameter 12.8 cm, height 2.8 cm. Minor gilt wear to edges; three have small chips; one has a 1.5 mm loss to base gilding.

Cups: height 7 cm, top diameter 8.6 cm. One cup has restored stem; minor gilt wear on rims.

Overall excellent visual condition; all flaws are minor and visible only under close inspection.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Bohemian enamelled glass refers to decorative glass objects produced in the historic region of Bohemia, renowned since the nineteenth century for high-quality coloured glass decorated with hand-applied gilding, raised enamel work, and intricate painted patterns.

These pieces were typically crafted from blown coloured glass, such as deep cobalt blue, which was then decorated by hand using gold leaf or liquid gold for gilding, alongside raised enamel appliques created by layering liquid glass enamel before firing.

Authentic Moser pieces are identified by the precise weight and clarity of the glass, high-density gilded detailing, meticulously hand-formed raised enamel work, and occasionally signature stamps or numbered inventory marks polished onto the underside of the base.

A decorative glass tea set can be displayed inside a glazed cabinet, arranged along a sideboard top as a focal point, or styled on a tray in a dining area to introduce rich colour and historical texture into contemporary spaces.

Clean gently by hand using lukewarm water and a soft microfibre cloth. Avoid immersion in hot water, abrasive detergents, chemical cleaners, or dishwashers, as these will wear away delicate surface gilding and raised enamel embellishments.
