Description

An authentic French porcelain tête-à-tête tea set, produced in Paris around 1880–1890, in the Sèvres revival style typical of the Belle Époque. The set includes a teapot, milk jug, sugar bowl, and two cups. All pieces are decorated in rich bleu céleste glaze, with finely painted floral sprays and shaped reserves containing portraits of elegantly dressed 18th-century women — possibly including Marie Antoinette — framed by scrolling gilded borders. The quality of the portrait painting is exceptional, showing meticulous detail and subtle shading. While the underside of each piece bears a pseudo-Sèvres mark, the set was likely produced by one of the leading Parisian ateliers of the period. There is a possibility that the set was produced by the Samson manufactory, known for its high-quality revivals of royal French porcelain.

Dimensions:

Teapot: height 17 cm, width 16 cm, depth 12 cm

Milk jug: height 10 cm, width 11 cm, depth 7.5 cm

Sugar bowl: height 9 cm, width 14 cm, depth 10 cm

Cups: height 6.5 cm, width 8.5 cm, depth 7 cm

Condition: Excellent antique condition. No chips, cracks or restorations. Minimal wear to gilding and painted decoration. Enamels very well preserved.

Sevres style porcelain is characterised by luxurious ground colours such as blue and rose, highly detailed hand-painted portraits or floral subjects within gilded cartouches, and intricate raised gilding.

These pieces are crafted from hard-paste or soft-paste porcelain, finished with an enamel glaze, meticulously hand-painted with mineral pigments, and accented with applied gold leaf.

Authentic pieces are identified through makers marks or factory ciphers on the underside, quality of the hand-painting, weight, glaze consistency, and evidence of age-appropriate wear.

Antique porcelain sets work well displayed in glass-fronted cabinets, on sideboards, or curated on open shelving to add colour, texture, and historical contrast to modern spaces.

Clean antique porcelain by hand using lukewarm water and a mild detergent, avoiding harsh scrubbing or dishwashers to protect the delicate hand-painting and gold leaf accents.
