Flow blue is a style of white earthenware originating in Staffordshire, England, during the 1820s, characterised by a cobalt blue transfer print that purposefully bled into the glaze during firing to create a hazy, soft-edged effect resembling Chinese porcelain.

To protect delicate overglaze gilding and crazed ceramic surfaces, items should be kept out of direct sunlight, dusted gently with a dry microfibre cloth, and never submerged in water or subjected to harsh cleaning agents.

Such statement vessels serve as dramatic focal points when placed upon a minimalist console table or mantelpiece, providing a rich contrast of deep indigo and metallic gold against neutral architectural backdrops.

Authentic items feature characteristic cobalt bleeding beneath a glossy glaze, hand-applied overglaze gilding or enamel highlights known as clobbering, and historical pottery transfer prints, often accompanied by faint maker impressions or iron-red pattern numbers.

These pieces are crafted from porous earthenware or semi-porcelain bodies, coated in a tin or lead glaze containing lime, which chemically reacted with the cobalt pigment during kiln firing to intentionally blur the transferred motifs.
