Fine Coalport Cecil Jones Tea & Coffee True Trio, C.1840

19th century
Description

A very rare and exceptionally beautiful tea and coffee set, aka true trio!

The trio was made at the Coalport factory in the 1840s, using a rare and complex mould, with embossed edges and a high handle with a split upper terminal. An identical mould can be found in Michael Berthoud's Compendium of English cups on page 185.

But it’s not just about the mould. Here we have a rare type of painting, where the reserves on the items are not just painted with floral compositions but also include landscape pieces – such painting is more difficult to execute and is much rarer!

Painting of this level was performed at Coalport by Cecil Jones, a very talented artist and a recognized maestro of floral painting. In old Coalport pattern books, some patterns are clearly attributed as his work; unfortunately, the pattern on this trio is lost (pages are missing), but by all indications, it is Jones's work.

Items are marked to the reverse by a pattern number in gold 4/121

Dimensions: teacup, height – 6 cm, diameter at the top – 10.9 cm, hold 200 ml.

Coffee cup, height – 7 cm, diameter at the top – 8.6 cm, holds 185 ml.

Saucer, diameter – 15.5 cm.

Condition: excellent, without any losses and restorations, without glaze crazing, just some slight gilt wear can be noted.
