FAQs

Tilt-top tables, often referred to as snap tables, gained popularity in the 18th century during the Georgian period. Designed with a hinged mechanism, the table top could be tilted vertically to save space against a wall when not in use.

These tables were traditionally crafted from dense hardwoods, most commonly mahogany, due to its strength and rich grain. The construction typically features a turned central pillar supported by a tripod base with cabriole legs.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the construction joints, such as hand-cut dovetails, traditional wooden pegs, and the wear patterns on the tilt mechanism. Genuine antique timber will display natural ageing, oxidisation, and a characteristic patina.

This piece functions effectively as a compact surface in a living room or study. It can be left tilted to display the wood grain as a decorative wall feature, or used flat to hold a small lamp, books, or decorative objects.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and treating periodically with high-quality beeswax. Keep the table away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the mahogany from drying out or warping.
