Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1860s:
Unglazed foot rim: natural grubbiness and wear from standing on tabletops.
Hand-painted enamels: bright cobalt, iron red and yellow pigments over white earthenware.
Hollow base interior: concentric wiping ridges from traditional pottery workshop finishing.
Painted red tally mark inside the base: individual pieceworker identification mark.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian Staffordshire Toby pepperpot figure dates from 1860 in the English Country House style. Modelled in earthenware ceramic with a polychrome enamel glaze, the figurine depicts a Toby character wearing a yellow tricorn hat, blue coat, orange trousers, and a green necktie while holding a small mug. Multiple ventilation holes pierce the top of the hat to dispense pepper, while a singular aperture sits in the base for filling. The circular pedestal base has painted yellow lining around the edge, and the painted facial features include rosy cheeks and dark hair strands. The object measures 14 cm high, 6.5 cm wide, and 6.5 cm deep. Displayed upon a sideboard top in a traditional dining room or kitchen, the piece functions as a decorative tabletop accessory or a functional condiment dispenser. The earthenware construction provides durability for domestic use while maintaining historical character through its hand-painted details. Collectors of Victorian ceramics and kitchenalia place such items within dining displays to add historic charm to interior spaces.

FAQs

A Staffordshire Toby pepperpot figure is a 19th-century English earthenware condiment caster modelled in the likeness of a Toby character, featuring perforated holes at the top for dispensing pepper.

These items were typically slip-cast or mould-formed from earthenware clay, fired, and finished with lead glazes alongside hand-painted polychrome enamel decoration.

Authentic pieces generally display age-appropriate crazing in the glaze, lightweight earthenware construction, unglazed base rims, and hand-painted variations rather than uniform modern decals.

Small ceramic figures can be displayed on kitchen open shelving, inside a glazed dresser, or arranged alongside traditional tableware to add character to a dining space.

Clean gently using a soft, dry cloth or lukewarm water with mild soap, avoiding prolonged immersion in water, harsh chemicals, or abrasive pads to protect the glaze and enamel.
