Chestnut baskets were popular dining table centrepieces during the Georgian and Victorian eras, traditionally used for serving chestnuts, fruit, or biscuits. The blue and white transfer printing technique advanced significantly in early 19th-century England, allowing intricate chinoiserie and botanical patterns to be mass-produced on fine earthenware.

These items were typically crafted from refined earthenware, creamware, or pearlware, finished with a glossy lead glaze. The distinctive pierced or reticulated lattice walls were hand-cut or moulded while the clay was leather-hard, often complemented by applied decorative motifs and integral loop handles.

Authenticity is determined by examining the paste, glaze crazing, weight, and makers marks or registration numbers stamped on the base. Early 19th-century pieces often exhibit stilt marks from the kiln, slight asymmetries due to hand-forming, and soft, blurred edges in the transfer-printed design characteristic of hand-pulled tissues.

An antique blue and white basket adds texture and heritage to contemporary spaces when used as a focal point on a dining table, sideboard, or open shelving unit. It can be displayed empty to showcase the reticulated craftsmanship or filled with seasonal fruit, pine cones, or dried botanicals.

Antique ceramics should be hand-washed gently in lukewarm water using mild detergent when necessary; they must never be placed in a dishwasher. Avoid harsh scrubbing and prolonged soaking to protect the aged glaze, underlying paste, and delicate pierced details from damage.
