Description

A very good early 18thc oak "joined" table...it is also possible it could have been a large stool, but makes a very useful "lamp" table...it is constructed in the same way as the early joint stools of the period, with pegging and the top has the early feature of a large thumbnail moulding...quite worn in places. The table has a very good colour and shows adze and saw marks, which are always nice to see....early label underneath the seat for Simkins Depository - Colchester.

Joined furniture from this period is characterised by mortise and tenon joinery, pegged joints, and solid timber construction, typically utilising native hardwoods like English oak before the widespread adoption of mahogany.

Cabinet makers primarily used quartersawn oak with distinct medullary rays, alongside secondary woods such as elm or pine, held together with wooden pegs rather than metal nails.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-planed surface irregularities, natural shrinkage cracks, pegged joinery, and deep surface patination accumulated through centuries of oxidisation and wax polishing.

This piece functions effectively as an accent table or bedside surface, contrasting cleanly against minimalist modern plaster walls or pairing with neutral upholstery to ground the space with historical texture.

Maintain antique oak by keeping it away from direct heat sources and sunlight, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and applying microcrystalline wax sparingly to nourish the timber without sealing the surface.
