FAQs

Staffordshire flatbacks are press-moulded earthenware ornaments produced in Staffordshire, England, primarily during the 19th century. They feature a decorated, detailed front and an unpainted, flattened back designed to sit flush against walls or narrow mantelpieces.

These ornaments were produced using white earthenware clay pressed into plaster moulds, fired, and finished with colourful lead enamel glazes. Foliage details were created using shredded clay pushed through a sieve, often embellished with gilt accents.

Authentic period pieces usually exhibit simple press-moulding lines, small kiln-firing ventilation holes at the back or base, soft glaze crazing, and hand-painted enamel details. Most early examples were un-marked on the base due to small-scale pottery production methods.

A flatback cottage is traditionally placed on a fireplace mantelpiece, windowsill, or bookshelf where its flat reverse remains unseen. Grouping multiple ceramic cottages together on a sideboard creates a curated architectural vignette within country or eclectic interiors.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft-bristled brush to remove accumulation from delicate encrusted clay foliage. Avoid immersing the piece in water, as porous low-fired earthenware and cold-painted or gilt embellishments can deteriorate.
