Description

A Sadler Liverpool Delft theatrical tile, circa 1770, depicting 'MRS CIBBER in the Character of MONIMIA'.

From a series of 18th century tiles depicting actors and actresses produced in Liverpool by John Sadler (1720-1789). Sadler experimented with transfer-printing on white glazed delftware tiles, transferring images from engraved copper plates to tiles, using enamel colours fixed in low-temperature firing.

Susannah Maria Cibber (1714-1766) was the most celebrated and highest paid actress of her day and the leading lady at Drury Lane Theatre.

Liverpool delft tiles from the 18th century are tin-glazed earthenware tiles, often featuring transfer-printed designs developed by printers like Sadler and Green, depicting theatrical figures, Aesops fables, or pastoral scenes.

These pieces were crafted from a buff earthenware clay body, covered in a tin-opacified white glaze, and decorated using black or red enamel transfer-printing techniques pioneered in England during the Georgian period.

Authentic examples typically exhibit characteristic delft glaze imperfections, a thin profile, a reddish-buff earthenware biscuit on the reverse, and fine stipple-engraved transfer printing lines associated with the Liverpool factories.

An antique tile can be mounted in a bespoke metal stand for tabletop display, framed as wall art, or incorporated into a decorative architectural surround to highlight its historic character.

Preserve these objects by keeping them away from direct sunlight, humidity fluctuations, and harsh cleaning agents; dust gently with a soft, dry brush and handle with clean hands to protect the fragile glaze.
