17th Century Oak Refectory Table

A late 17th century oak refectory table with fantastic colour and patina, standing on baluster turned legs united by stretchers. The base has a lunette carved freize to one side with a plain shaped frieze to the other three sides. The two plank top is removable and has acquired the most beautiful finish over centuries of wax polishing…
 
A beautiful period oak table that is just the right size to seat six people. The colour and patina are absolutely gorgeous - my photos really don’t do it justice!
 
Condition: The base has been modified, and this is reflected in the price - originally the stretchers would have run around the outside of the legs, but it has been altered so that there is an H shape stretcher. This has made the table more practical for use with chairs, as previously you would have had to lift them over a stretcher to push them in, and this is presumably why it was done. I’m not sure if the timber for the stretchers is original to the table and has just been reused, or ...
