An ususual form, well executed using exotic timber, made for a specific, currently unknown commission. With drawers to each side, raised on carved scroll feet with counter-sunk brass castors.
In good original, unrestored condition and structurally sound, the top has some typical superficial wear and a burn mark.
* I haven''t come across many examples of sabicu, however the timber used on the top of this table correlates with examples I have seen. It was interesting to read in Adam Bowett''s wonderful book ''Woods in British Furniture -Making 1400-1900'' that in an the early 19th century account Laslett notes ''the rich dark colour resembles and is sometimes mistaken for rosewood.'' an observation that could be applied to the carved pedestal and feet in this example.
Another sabicu table almost certainly by Trotter, of a slightly earlier date and formerly in the collection of the late David Reid (of Whytock and Reid) was offered in The Scottish Sale, Bonhams Edinburgh, 16th Apr
