Constructed in finely marked Circassian Walnut, with precisely executed marquetry work, and gilt bronze mounts; of circular form, rising three swept bronze dressed legs, terminating in carved lion paw feet, having castors below, and supporting a central column of baluster form, decorated with a bronze ring, cast with fleur-de-lys and foliates, with pendant foliates; the circular top having a tilt action, with radially laid veneers, crossbanded by guard reserves, and having six elliptical panels inlaid with foliates, and the table edge having a gilt bronze cast gadroon running edge.
England, circa 1860
Originally founded in 1803 by Stephen Taprell and William Holland, a relation of the architect Henry Holland, the firm of Holland & Sons soon became one of the largest and most successful furniture making companies in the 19th Century. The firm worked extensively for the Royal Family, being granted the Royal Warrant early in the reign of Queen Victoria, hence taking a leading part in the decoration and furnishing of Osborne House. Many examples have passed through our hands over the years, of stamped Holland & Sons furniture, having similarities to this table.
