Description

An excellent original antique George III period mahogany tilt top table. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1790’s period.

This is of superb quality and it’s a great size. The circular mahogany top has a gorgeous colour tone and wonderful grain patterns. This sits on a beautiful spiral turned base with tripod legs & pad feet, the top can tilt up and is held in place by a brass catch mechanism.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The George III period spans from 1760 to 1820, encompassing influences from Chippendale, Hepplewhite, and Sheraton, characterised by refined proportions, classical motifs, and exceptional cabinet-making craftsmanship.

These tables were traditionally crafted from dense hardwoods like solid mahogany or oak, featuring a birdcage or knuckle-joint mechanism beneath the top to allow the surface to pivot and fold vertically for storage.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, natural wax patination, authentic timber shrinkage, and traditional peg construction rather than modern metal screws.

Pair the dark timber with contemporary neutral walls and minimalist seating to create a striking focal point, utilising the folding top function as both a practical surface and a piece of wall art when tilted.

Maintain the timber by dusting with a soft, dry cloth and applying natural beeswax periodically, avoiding direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent cracking and fading.
