FAQs

Trestle tables date back to medieval times when boards were laid across portable supports for banquets and easily dismantled afterward. By the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, they evolved into permanent, sturdy fixtures in great halls and farmhouses alike.

These tables are traditionally constructed from heavy domestic hardwoods like oak, elm, or walnut, featuring thick single-plank tops secured to sturdy trestle feet using pegged mortise and tenon joints without metal fixings.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-planed surface irregularities, pit sawing marks, wooden trunnels or pegs, natural shrinkage cracks, and deep patination accumulated over centuries of use.

Pair the historical timber with minimalist modern seating and clean lighting fixtures to create a balanced contrast between centuries-old craftsmanship and contemporary design.

Maintain the wood by avoiding direct sunlight and excessive heat fluctuations, occasionally feeding the surface with natural beeswax while steering clear of silicone-based polishes and harsh chemical cleaners.
