Georgian Gillows Style Sewing Table

19th century
Description

Early 19th century Georgian mahogany and boxwood inlaid Gillows of Lancaster style work or sewing table. The table stands on thin turned and reeded legs with original brass castors. The table is double sided with a large drawer on one side and a dummy drawer on the other side. Both the front and back are inlaid with a nice design boxwood stringing. Th top has a triple reeded edge and is crossbanded in rosewood. Brass lion head handles both front and back. The two side leaves are help up by two wooden lopers / hinges at either end underneath. he pull out under bag is nicely upholstered and is in good order.

One of the nicest and most unusual features of this table is the wonderfully fitted drawer. The drawer is deep and is fitted inside with various slides and drawers all round. Some of the drawers are dummies whilst others are proper drawers, there is also a secret drawer.

The piece is in very good condition overall but has been professionally re-polished within the last 50 years.

SIZE; 31 1/2" wide by 23 1/2" deep by 29 1/2" high when fully opened. It is 17 1/2" wide with the leaves both down.
