Small 19th Century French Mahogany Bureau Plat

19th century
Description

A Very Fine Quality Small 19th Century French Mahogany Bureau Plat or Writing Table.

The bureau plat is one of the most famous pieces of French furniture with numerous successful designs being produced, primarily in the mid-late 18th century. Our piece, made in the 19th century but patterned after a late 18th century model, is distinguished by its very usable small size, the particularly fine mounts used throughout and the original and beautifully aged maroon leather top. With its elegant fine lines, this piece stands beautifully and relies primarily on the contrast between beautifully patinated mahogany and fine ormolu for its decorative impact. There are three drawers in the frieze and each drawer front are mounted with metalwork of exceptional quality. This ormolu consists of beaded and other textured mounts which all catch the light slightly differently. There are also fine mounts used as collars at the top of the legs and a wonderful escutcheon plate on the central drawer which is elegant.

Writing tables are very popular pieces of furniture but finding such a beautiful example of this small size is very unusual indeed. It would work equally well as a dressing table or bedroom piece or in a fine drawing room.
