A Scottish George III Solid Mahogany Dining Table, Edinburgh C.1805

18th century
Description

'With two flaps, hung with rule or square joints with tongues, on four plain tapered legs, one of ditto on each side to fly, size of top four feet six by three feet six, and all under, to be each superficial foot of top'

The description above is taken from page 18 of 'The Edinburgh Cabinet and Chair Makers' Book of Prices', 1805 edition, republished with a new introduction by David Jones, Kirk Wynd Press, Cupar MM)

This example is a shade larger (4' 8" x 3' 6") with the optional extras of two additional 'fixed legs' and 'rounded corners to the top'.

Exciting is an unusual term for this type of restrained table, however to find such a close match to the specifics stipulated in a contemporary journal is pretty rare. By the 1811 edition of the Book of Prices, the table becomes square and no measurements of the top are included, and unlike some of the negative trends experienced in the current furniture market, the price goes up...

Condition: Consistent colour with some minor dents and scratches to the top.The top of one 'fly leg' requires a minor repair.

Free local delivery. Reliable transport throughout the UK can be easily arranged at cost price, please let me know if you wouldlike a quote or have any further questions.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
