FAQs

Tilt-top tables, often referred to as snap-top tables, gained popularity in 18th-century Britain as versatile furniture designed to be tilted upright and stored against a wall when not in use to save floor space.

Authentic period pieces are typically constructed from dense hardwoods like solid mahogany or walnut, featuring turned central pedestals, tripod cabriole legs, and specialized birdcage or pivot mechanisms allowing the top to rotate and tilt.

Authentication involves examining the timber grain, hand-cut joinery, patination of the wood, and the mechanical pivot mechanism for signs of age, hand-tool marks, and period-appropriate wear patterns.

These versatile pieces function effectively as accent furniture, displaying decorative objects in an empty corner or serving as a functional surface beside seating when lowered into position.

Preserve the finish by keeping the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources, applying occasional microcrystalline wax, and avoiding liquid polishes or silicone-based cleaners.
