Large Japanese Kinkozan Satsuma Bowl Commissioned by the Ikeda Gomei Company.

Description

As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this large super quality Meiji Period 1868-1912 ribbed Satsuma bowl, the bowl is predominantly decorated throughout with high quality painted and gilded flowers many of which are painted in heavy enamel moriage style decoration, the main areas of floral decoration are interspersed with a myriad of finely enameled butterflies and moths both to the inside and outside decoration, the central interior depicts a landscape with a brace of pheasants sat above a lakeside setting with a waterfall to the foreground , the scalloped rim is finely gilded and the bowl is marked to the underside in a black and gilt square, the bowl was commissioned for the Ikeda company of Kobe , a retailer of fine Japanese works of art according to the limited records available , we are also advised that the director of the Ikeda company traveled to London in 1903 looking to further his business interests , the seal reads "Ikeda Gomei Sei Kintei" this would suggest a date of manufacture of circa 1900 , a large and highly decorative Satsuma bowl for your collection.

It was not uncommon for commissioning agents with the retail buying power of Ikeda Gomei to have insisted on their particular seals being placed on the products as opposed to the artist signature.
