Staffordshire Figures from the Crimean War

19th century
Description

Russo-phobia in the mid nineteenth century made figures associated with the Crimean War popular subjects. The three figures represent Turkey, England and France; they are respectively Sultan Abdul-Mejid, Queen Victoria and Napoleon III. The decoration on the figures is characteristic of the mid 19th Century period. Few colours were used and blue was the predominant colour.

Portraying a great event in contemporary public life, these figures appealed to the less wealthy populace and reflect the imagination of the potters of the time.

This is a good example with just a few paint flakes and scuffs. No cracks or breakage.

Circa 1854.

Referenced in Pugh E as figure 75
