A Victorian Staffordshire Milkmaid with cow and calf.
 
A charming Victorian Staffordshire Cow and Milkmaid, the latter as a spill vase. The milkmaid has an orange skirt and blue blouse. She holds a green pail on her head, and rests on a russet and white cow, with a grey and white calf lying down underneath.
 
Condition: Good. Some wear to the green paint, particularly on the apron and pail. Small chip to the rear ear not noticeable from the front. Hairline crack to base.
 
A combination of the right clays, inventive potters such as Josiah Wedgwood and available labour made the Staffordshire district the centre of the china industry. Many small forgotten factories as well as the giants such as Spode, Wedgwood, Adams, clustered in the towns of Burslem, Cobridge, Fenton, Longton, Stoke and Tunstall, now incorporated in the present day town of Stoke-on-Trent.
