Description

A fine and large Satsuma pottery sake ewer, painted by Ryozan Okamoto, for the Yasuda Company, Meiji Period (1868 -1912). Beautifully hand painted to either side, with two large foliate shaped panels, containing scenes of numerous figures, at various pursuits, in garden settings. Both panels, connected by smaller panels, containing a river landscape, and an interior scene. All upon a millefleur ground, between continuous lappet borders.

The spout painted with panels contains Buddhistic motifs, flowering plants and stylised raised gilt flowerheads. Having a large scroll handle, gilded with further stylised floral motif, upon a black ground.

Surmounted by a domed cover, enamelled with millefleur, above lappets, beneath a bud finial.

Signed Ryozan Okamoto, Yasuda Company in gilt. The black seal reading, Dai Nihon, Kyoto, Tokiji Goshigaisha.

Condition: Typical, minimal wear to the gilding. No damage. No restoration.
