Description

An extremely well decorated antique large late 19th Century Japanese Kutani charger, dating to circa 1860-80.
The charger is hand-painted with inner cartouches, depicting different fan shaped bordered scenes in an asymmetric manner. Beautifully painted scenes within each fan shaped cartouce, interspersed between these are other painted fans and decorative designs. The underside of the plate is decorated around the edge with scrolled designs and red border lines, and is signed in a red script - Dai Nippon Kutani Tsukuru (made at Kutani, in Greater Japan). Condition is very good without any damage.
The word Kutani means Nine Valleys and is the name of an area and a village. Porcelain manufacture from this region dates back to the mid 17th Century. The manufacturing method experienced a resurgence from the start of the 19th Century, and continues today.
