Large Scale C19th Parian-ware Porcelain Copy of “The Venus De Milo “

19th century
Description

Large scale C19th parian-ware porcelain copy of “The Venus de Milo”.

Well-modelled porcelain study of the Ancient Greek marble statue of the goddess thought to be the work of the sculptor Alexandria of Antioch . Created sometime between 130 and 100 BC , the statue depicts Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty. The figure is named after Aphrodite’s Roman name ,Venus, and the Greek island of Milos, where it was discovered. The larger than life-size marble original now on permanent display at the Louvre Museum, Paris , France.

This larger than the normal reduction scale model parian porcelain version is in excellent original condition with no damage or repairs. The modelling is true to the original, showing the defects and aging to the surface of the marble.

Parian ware is a type of biscuit porcelain produced to imitate marble . Developed around 1845 by the Staffordshire pottery manufacturer Mintons , and named after Paros , the Greek island renowned for its fine-textured white marble , used since antiquity for sculpture.

A highly-decorative classical sculpture of one of the most famous and recognisable statues of the ancient world. The texture and colour of the porcelain almost indistinguishable on sight from marble .
