Fine Pair of 19th Century Japanese Kutani Dishes, Dating to Circa 1860-80.

19th century
Description

An extremely well decorated antique pair of late 19th Century Japanese Kutani dishes, dating to circa 1860-80.

The dishes are hand-painted with inner cartouches, depicting different scenes in an asymmetric manner. Within the panels are geometric patterns, flowers. The decoration is done in the traditional iron red and black, highlighted with gold, on a cream background. The underside of the plate is decorated around the edge with scrolled designs and red border lines, and is signed in a red script - Dai Nippon Kutani Tsukuru (made at Kutani, in Greater Japan). Condition is very good without any damage to either dish.

The word Kutani means Nine Valleys and is the name of an area and a village. Porcelain manufacture from this region dates back to the mid 17th Century. The manufacturing method experienced a resurgence from the start of the 19th Century, and continues today.
