Gaetano MERCHI: a splendid late 18th century TERRACOTTA SCULPTURE of the famous French dancer, Mlle. Guimand supported on its original variegated marble base. Signed by the artist and dated 1779. 28ins high overall.

*** Gaetano MERCHI was a renowned Italian sculptor born in 1747. He portrayed a number of famous actresses, including the French dancer Marie-Madeleine Guimand whilst studying in Paris. (Apart from being a very successful dancer, Mlle. Guimand was one of the most famous courtesans of pre-revolutionary France.) Merchi died in 1823.
