For Sale This Very Rare Fine Early Japanese Arita Blue and White Mug or Ewer, Circa 1670

Description

For sale this very rare fine early Japanese Arita blue and white mug or ewer, circa 1670. Very well potted in the European form with a strap handle and straight neck, decorated with floral and geometric designs, the bulbous body supported on a stout thick foot showing Burt orange in the unglazed areas. This dates to the first period of Japanese export ware and is excellent in colour and form. Slight professional restoration the neck rim, but no other damage to the body or handle. It stands 22cm tall. Similar ewers and mugs are recorded in Japanese Export Porcelain by Oliver Impey see pages 49 & 53 and an identical in shape, ewer, but with a powder blue glaze in the Oliver Impey Collection by Barry Davies item 102 page 178 and 179.
