This is a really, really lovely Coalport Dish manufactured in the year of George III’s death in 1820.
This dish was manufactured for Coalport by the famous Mr John Rose in circa 1820, five short years after the Battle of Waterloo. This particular item of porcelain features on page 166 of the seminal work “British Porcelain” by “G. Godden”: this is Mr Geoffrey Godden, the ceramics specialist, who died in May 2016 aged 87, who was an author, historian, collector and dealer; but to the public he was best known for his expert valuations of fine china on BBC Television’s Antiques Roadshow.
The Coalport Works were founded by John Rose (1772-1841), a local farmer’s son, in 1796 and began trading as John Rose and Edward Blakeway & Co. By 1800, Coalport was Britain’s largest china manufactory. China continued to be manufactured at Coalport until the Works closed in 1926 and the company moved to The Potteries, Stoke-on-Trent.
The condition is excellent with no apparent chips, cra
...cks or restoration.
