Superb Pair Of Candlesticks By Jean Gilles

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Prometheus Antiques

A wonderful pair of painted biscuit porcelain figural candlesticks by Jean Gilles of Paris, dating to the mid Nineteenth century. The candlesticks are modelled as Neoclassical maidens holding urns above the heads. The figres stand on elaborate bases with goats head and laurel motifs. The quality of both modelling and painting is superb. The base shows the typical applied blue mark of Jean Gilles. Jean Gille was one of the leading manufacturers of colored biscuit porcelain in the 19th century. The firm dates back to the 1830s and displayed at the 1851 Great Exhibition in London where it was awarded a Prize Medal. The Gille firm, listed as Gille Jeune, also exhibited at the 1862 International Exhibition in London and the Paris Exhibition of 1867. After Gille''s death in 1868, the firm was taken up by one of his modelers, Charles Baury to become Vion & Baury. These examples are in exceptional condition with no damage and few slight firing cracks. C.1860
