Beautiful Pair of Early Royal Worcester Figures

Description

"Paul and Virgina" ~ a fine, rare and early pair of ROYAL WORCESTER PORCELAIN FIGURES delightfully modelled and delicately painted in "Raphaelesque" colours.

Based on the novel "Paul et Virgine" by Bernadin Saint-Pierre, first published in 1787, these charming figures reflect the popularity the novel achieved in Victorian times. They depict the main characters who were friends from birth and who fall in love when teenagers on the Island of Mauritius.

He holds his hat filled with tropical flowers, whilst she has a pineapple and other fruit in the folds of her dress. Quite tall at 15ins high maximum, one is impressed with the factory mark underneath. An elegant and refined pair of figures.
