Description

Rare 17th Century Japanese Arita Blue and White Porcelain Charger – Farmer and Animals – Edo Period, c.1670–1700

A fine and impressive Japanese Arita blue and white porcelain charger, dating from the late 17th century, Edo period, circa 1670–1700.

This exceptional large circular dish is beautifully decorated in traditional underglaze cobalt blue on a white porcelain ground. The central scene depicts a traditionally dressed farmer or herdsman accompanied by two animals, standing within an enchanting rural landscape. The composition includes a rustic bridge crossing a river, distant mountains, trees and traditional architectural details, creating a charming and atmospheric pastoral scene.

The central decoration is enclosed by an intricately painted scrolling border, surrounded by radiating panels containing alternating floral arrangements, stylised botanical designs and charming figural landscape scenes. The rich cobalt blue decoration, finely painted details and distinctive segmented border are characteristic of Japanese Arita porcelain produced for the export market during the late 17th century.

The design demonstrates the influence of earlier Chinese blue and white Kraak porcelain, which inspired Japanese Arita porcelain manufacturers during this important period of Japanese ceramic production. The result is a particularly attractive and highly decorative example of early Japanese export porcelain.

Condition

An exceptionally well-preserved example, offered in very fine original condition. The dish is completely free from damage, with no chips, cracks, hairline fractures or restoration. An unusually attractive example for a porcelain of this considerable age.

Dimensions

• Diameter: 36 cm (14.17 inches).

• Height: 6.5 cm (2.56 inches).

Price: £995.00

The price includes secure packing and shipping to any UK mainland address.

A particularly fine and impressive example of late 17th-century Japanese Arita blue and white porcelain, offering collectors an opportunity to acquire an attractive and well-preserved piece of early Edo-period export ceramics.

An excellent addition to a collection of antique Japanese porcelain, Arita ware, 17th-century Asian ceramics or historic blue and white export porcelain.
