An Edwardian creamware dairy butter slab serves as a practical kitchenalia piece from the Victorian style tradition. The circular glazed earthenware platter displays a cream background with black serif typography spelling out pure butter along the shallow inset rim, complemented by hand holds set into both sides and a smooth glaze finish. Measuring 7 cm in height, 42 cm in width, and 42 cm in depth, the heavy ceramic construction sits flat on surfaces. This functional antique fits naturally on a kitchen island or pantry counter in a modern rustic farmhouse interior. The round format and bold lettering suit daily use for food preparation or presentation, bringing authentic agricultural heritage into contemporary domestic spaces without needing specialized maintenance beyond standard care for glazed ceramics.

Butter slabs were utilized in 19th and early 20th-century dairies, creameries, and grocery shops to hold, display, and keep fresh bulk quantities of butter for retail sale.

Most butter slabs were crafted from heavy glazed earthenware, creamware, or ironstone, materials chosen for their cool surface temperatures and non-porous hygienic qualities.

Authentic period pieces generally feature transfer-printed or hand-painted black serif lettering, heavy ceramic weight, natural glaze crazing, and occasional underside maker marks from historical potteries.

These slabs serve as decorative risers on kitchen islands, pantry counter bases for oil bottles and salt cellars, or table display platters for cheese and fruit.

Wash gently by hand using warm water and a mild dish soap, avoiding prolonged soaking, abrasive scrubbers, or dishwashers that could damage historical glaze crazing and transfer lettering.
