This Edwardian grocer's slab is an English ironstone dairy collectable designed for counter display in a rustic farmhouse style. The rectangular ceramic tray has rounded corners, raised sides, and a recessed arch base, covered in a cream white glaze. Black transfer-printed typography across the front edge spells PURE BUTTER in Gothic lettering, complemented by a glossy finish that shows extensive age-related crazing, staining, and old hairlines. The physical proportions measure 8 cm high, 39.5 cm wide, and 24 cm deep. Position this piece on a kitchen island or work surface to hold small items or serve as a decorative accessory.

FAQs

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, grocers and dairies used heavy ceramic or ironstone slabs on shop counters to display fresh butter, lard, or cheese kept cool by the dense ceramic material.

These slabs were primarily made from heavy ironstone or glazed earthenware, featuring transfer-printed lettering and a durable clear glaze to resist grease and moisture.

Authentic period examples feature dark transfer-printed typography, subtle surface crazing within the glaze, minor staining from historical butter fats, and substantial weight due to the solid ceramic body.

A grocers slab can be styled on a kitchen island or sideboard as a decorative display riser for oils, salt cellars, or candles, introducing texture and historical context to contemporary spaces.

Wash gently by hand using warm water and mild liquid soap, avoiding harsh abrasive pads or chemical cleaners that could damage the original glaze, crackle patina, or transfer lettering.
